“Gracious Offerings”
An offering is a quiet ritual that is carefully selected and thought out as a symbol or demonstration of gratitude. It’s often not ostentatious or elaborate - rather it characteristically reflects gratitude in a very specific manner. On our way home after the Crowded House concert, I mentioned to a bunch of friends that I had been reminiscing about the song: “Cathedral” by Crosby Stills, Nash and Young. On our way home, the delegated driver played the very song in his car as we meandered home – a gracious offering!
A family member delights us with a tale of being invited to celebrate a close friend’s promotion at work. She takes along the standard bottle of wine and chip and helps them prepare a lavish meal of ribs and salad. A moment before everyone tucks in, her dutiful host says: ”You must be hungry?” My lovely relative enthuses: “Yes! I am... - looking forward to the feast”. The chips and wine had been long polished-off. The not-so-gracious hostess says: ”Well, let me take you home, so that you can eat... you do have food at home don’t you?” I have witnessed greater generosity amongst the lowly and the poor. They graciously offer to share all they have.
Note that there are certain activities, attitudes, persons, even foods and drinks – which take us away from our centre. They throw us off balance and deplete our souls. May we - during this holiday season of lavishness, celebration, joy – offer what we can, with grace – not ostentation...?
It’s a time for giving something back... so come, ALL of YOU - don’t hold back!
Warmest Wishes,
